Since this is my first daily summary for the blog, I’ll ‘splain: Yet another motivator for me is to “have fun” with this, and for me, “fun” is data mining and keeping track of things and also trying my hand at making pretty pictures and trying to do infographics. I’ve been making these since I restarted 4 weeks ago.
The top line is the date and an emoji, if relevant. The next set of information is a summary of the food I ate along with emoji representations. I color-code the backgrounds into swim lanes, with different ones for what I considered a meal; if the dominant component of the snack was fat, carbs, or protein; or if it’s a seed, fruit, vegetable, or dairy. I then summarize the food in big font and provide a bar chart indicating where I was on my macros in terms of fraction of 1.00 (100%). In the last few days, I also added what my actual goal is because the food might not make sense, otherwise.
Next down, besides a pithy phrase (haven’t been that pithy, lately), is any exercise. Listing the minutes, if it’s a walk I also include the elevation gain, and then below that swim lane, I summarize calories expended and the Apple Watch rings along with steps.
With that all explained … the reflection on today: Today’s food was exactly the same as yesterday because I was finishing up left-overs and figured that was easiest. Not the most satisfying in terms of variety, but I hit everything to within 5%, which is my target. The cake was almost the last of my birthday cake from last week, I’ll be finishing it up tomorrow.
With the planned food tomorrow, I’ll also be able to get back into the Doritos I got at Costco two weeks ago … this is the longest Doritos have lasted in my house! Despite everything else, I was finding myself sitting in the pantry eating them out of the bag. The only thing that has worked is that one night (last Thursday), I took the bag out and weighed out 1 oz portions that I put in individual bags, and I put those in the pantry. Remarkably, I haven’t snuck anything except a small corner of a chip from one bag in the last 4 days.
Regarding exercise, I was sedentary all day except I walked around doing dishes during one telecon. In the evening, I convinced myself to go out in the heat just before sunset and got a walk in. I’m on Day 6 of an Apple Watch competition with a friend, and he and I are extremely close. A little before midnight, I saw he was slightly ahead, so I went to the basement to get in as much time on the rower before midnight. I am 12 points ahead: 3216 vs 3228. Crazy-close, so it’s anyone’s competition tomorrow. If I get just 589 points, out of a possible 600, I win. Something tells me it’ll be a late night tomorrow on the elliptical, though I should really try during my 6-hr telecon to get some core exercises in, just 15 minutes at a time.
