Daily Summary: 01–03 January, 2021

To summarize the last three days, Friday was a continuation of the binging that I did on Thursday, finishing up pizza and trying to get through some other left-overs, plus of course it was New Years’ Day, something of a holiday.

Saturday, however, saw a slight return to normal, at least insofar as calories were concerned. It was still an over-eat relative to my “cut” calories, but it was a drastic under-eat compared with the maintenance / “stay” version. I also spent hours making tamales, so after both Saturday and today, Sunday, I have 19 of them in the freezer that I can pull out when needed. They were a bit more caloric this time, though, I think because I used more of the corn (masa harina) mixture relative to my chicken filling than usual. But, that’s what the math came out to: 573 calories for 3, as opposed to about 450 normally.

My tracking sheets all start the week on Sunday – and despite my post about how you shouldn’t set goals based on a day because if you need a day to tell you to do something, you’re not going to stick with it – I still feel an enormous psychological push that “Sunday = Restart.” And if it gets to the middle of the week and I’m doing poorly, I have an enormous inertia to just put off improving until the coming Sunday. I don’t know why …

Anyway, it was a good restart, where I stuck to my calorie and macro goals – to within 5% which is my margin – and I even did weights. It was the first time getting down to the basement to do weight lifting since November 29, 45 days ago. I didn’t get in cardio nor core exercises today, but I tripped over part of my weight equipment and ended up bleeding a fair bit from one toe, so the aim of cardio after dinner evaporated when my toe was still in pain six hours later. I expect it will be better tomorrow, but it, unfortunately, provides a convenient excuse.

So … it’s only Day 3, but let’s see how I’m doing with my 2021-themed goals for the year:

  • 0/2021 minutes core exercises.
  • 1/21 allowed days to exceed 2021 calories/day.
  • 5.7k/42.4k steps/week.
  • 42/2021 minutes per 4 months spent strength training.
  • 9.3/2021 km walked this year.
